A Sharon Tiger Techs Robotics Team recently traveled to the Razorback Invitational at the University of Arkansas to compete against some of the best 80 robotics teams in the world. After several days of competition, the Sharon Team, Tiger Techs Team Orange, received the Finalist Champion’s Award. The award is the highest award given at the event and celebrates a team that embodies the FIRST ® LEGO® League Challenge experience, by fully embracing the Core Values while achieving excellence and innovation in Robot Performance, Robot Design and the Innovation Project. The team also received a 4th Place Robot Alliance Award with their alliance partner from New Mexico, MVLA Rockets, and a 10th place robot performance score overall.
The theme for this season, “Super Powered”, provided an energy theme for the robot and project. The team designed, built, and programmed an EV3 LEGO Mindstorm Robot that autonomously completed tasks on a playing field for 2.5 minutes. In addition, the team created an innovative project solution, Park ‘n Charge, which solves a lack of convenient chargers for electric vehicles. The Park ‘n Charge is a high speed wireless charger located in commercial areas allowing for customers to shop, dine, and enjoy their time while their vehicle charges. The project enlisted guest speakers, multiple trips, and feedback from several area businesses and organizations. The team also applied for and received a provisional patent for their innovative solution.
The team, composed of nine students in 4th through 8th grade, qualified for the Razorback Invitational at Penn State Behrend in Erie back in January. While at the Northwest PA Championship, the Tiger Techs received the Second Place Champion’s Award and a Second Place Robot Performance Award.
The robotics team is part of the FIRST LEGO League organization. FIRST stands for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.” The teams are funded by community sponsors and the Sharon City School District.
